Hello, long time no blog post from me! This is something I plan to redress – starting just in time for Valentines Day with a free pattern and tutorial for stitching a sweet felt heart. This simple embroidery pattern is perfect for beginners, but would make a quick project for more experienced stitchers too. The pattern just uses two stitches, back stitch and running stitch, and includes details on how to work these two stitches.

Getting started
To get the full instructions and template of this free pattern, all you need to do is download the PDF pattern from the bottom of this page. I have tried to make the instructions as clear as possible and suitable for someone who is new to reading patterns. It is though my first time producing a pattern, so any feedback at all is gratefully recieved. If you find it easier to learn from watching videos, I have recorded a full video tutorial to my YouTube Channel – find the link at the bottom of this page.
What you need to get sewing
The materials and equipment you will need are:
~Felt (2 squares around 12cm²)
~Embroidery threads to complement the felt colour
~Embroidery needle (size 5 or 3 would be ideal)
~Tissue paper or water soluble stabiliser (see note on use below)
~Scissors
~Pins
~A small amount of toy stuffing

I reccomend using 100% wool felt if you can. It is really stable, won’t pill like acrylic felt and it also won’t stretch out of shape when you are working with it.
Transferring the pattern
I have provided instructions for transferring the pattern to the felt using tissue paper. You will trace the pattern onto a piece of tissue paper, pin the paper on to your felt and then stitch through the paper to follow the pattern. You can then easily tear the tissue paper away once you’ve finished stitching. You could though use a water soluble stabiliser instead. You will just need to follow the manufacturers instructions for the stabiliser.

I do love to see pictures of your completed projects. You can find me on Instagram and Facebook where you can tag or DM me. Or if you prefer, my email address is hello@whatkatystitched.co.uk. I really hope that you enjoy using this pattern.
Until next time – happy stitching!
